AMYJROBINSON | 愛美
Documentary & Travel Photographer in North East England
I’m Oi Mei (pronounced like oy-may), the person behind AMYJROBINSON. I’m a queer, autistic travel and documentary photographer, writer and producer based in Newcastle upon Tyne. My work is informed by a desire to connect with people and places, which shows in my approach to photography, writing and creative assignments.
I’ve exhibited at the Glasgow Gallery of Photography and Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre, and have worked with clients including Visit Faroe Islands, The Young Women's Film Academy, Hidden Iceland, and Belmond.
I have a wide range of skills and experiences, and I’m excited to collaborate with other artists, organisations and communities based in North East England, nationally and across the globe.
Photography Services
Documentary & Travel
My work has been commissioned by international clients including Belmond, Visit Faroe Islands and Scottish Sporting Journal, and published in print and online. I’ve documented search and rescue training in Iceland, foraging on the Isle of Skye and demonstrations in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Events & Media Coverage
I photograph community and corporate events across North East England, from live performances and LGBTQ+ events to fundraisers and community projects. Past clients include Darlington Council, Sister Shack CIC and Newcastle Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
Portraits & Editorial
I’ve taken thousands of portraits, created portfolio headshots for Tyne Tees Models and produced images for private clients. I offer shoots in both studio and natural environments, and can provide direction for a more posed, editorial look.
Lifestyle & Commercial
I’ve been fortunate enough to produce product, fashion and interior images for a range of brands around Europe. Past assignments include dishes at Fiskastykkið restaurant-café and outfits made using regenerative practices by Studio Monroe.
Documentary Services
I’m passionate about using mediums of photography, film and writing to document untold stories and lesser known culture in remote and rural landscapes. I’ve always held a deep curiosity about rural life, and my work celebrates the quiet resilience and creativity found in small communities. I work hard to build genuine relationships with local people and makers to create images that honour their history and surroundings, and often spend years nurturing trust with my contacts in rural communities.
Photojournalism
I’ve completed commissions for print and online publications, exploring subjects including emergency services, ecology, and farming practices through photography and writing. I enjoy gaining first-hand experience throughout my projects, and have worked in extreme weather conditions and various landscapes.
Video Production
I have produced and managed productions from the initial concept to final delivery, maintaining strong communication with clients, participants and creatives to ensure smooth delivery and completion of short or long-term projects within agreed budgets. You can read about and watch my debut eight-part docuseries ‘People of the Faroe Islands’ below.
Working with me
I want to create work that feels exciting and is tailored to you. It can be nerve-wracking to trust someone with your project, but I work hard to deliver results you’ll be pleased with.
We can get started with a free consultation - send me your contact details, an overview of your idea, and if you require any additional accommodations. I’ll be in touch to organise a time to discuss your project in more detail.

Workshops and Facilitation
I have years of experience facilitating workshops, panels, and events with a focus on identity, belonging and community. I’ve also supported other creatives in the practicalities of launching and running their own workshops. I’m currently developing an Arts Council bid to run a series of creative writing workshops for people of mixed identity. It’s a project close to my heart, and one I hope to share more about soon!
“The ‘Changing Seasons’ poetry workshop, ran by Oi Mei, was a beautifully peaceful space where I felt supported to explore poetry. This was something I had always wanted to get back to but didn't have the confidence or time before attending the workshop. It left me feeling joyful and able to explore writing more poetry in my everyday life as a way of self expression and processing my feelings. A huge thanks to Oi Mei for holding the workshop and guiding us so expertly!”
