AMYJROBINSON | 愛美
Documentary & Travel Photographer in North East England

I’m Oi Mei (pronounced like oy-may), the person behind AMYJROBINSON. I’m a queer, autistic travel and documentary photographer, writer and producer based in Newcastle upon Tyne. My work is informed by a desire to connect with people and places, which shows in my approach to photography, writing and creative assignments.

I’ve exhibited at the Glasgow Gallery of Photography and Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre, and have worked with clients including Visit Faroe Islands, The Young Women's Film Academy, Hidden Iceland, and Belmond.

I have a wide range of skills and experiences, and I’m excited to collaborate with other artists, organisations and communities based in North East England, nationally and across the globe.

  • “I really can't recommend Amy enough. They made me feel completely at ease, and it felt more like I was with a friend than with someone I'd just met. Amy is a true professional and the final pictures are incredible!”

    Ellie, Model

  • “Out of everyone I've worked with, I've never felt so comfortable and at ease than with Amy. Amy allows you to work within your own comfort and style, yet offers guidance and direction - they've captured my softest and most vulnerable side; I'll be eternally grateful.”

    Zovi, Model

  • “Truly grateful for the joy, care, and warm presence that Oi Mei brought… Collaborating on this film, IdentiTEA was a joy as we sipped tea and let our ideas evolve into something meaningful. Oi Mei helped me capture something I hold very dear.”

    YuJia, PhD Student

  • "Straightaway, Amy grasped exactly what I was looking for when I asked them for a custom poem to fit alongside a lookbook of images. The poem was a perfect fit."

    Barton Croft, Ceramics Studio

  • "An absolutely wonderful experience with an extremely talented photographer. They made me feel so comfortable and at ease."

    Lucy, Model

  • "Just want to say thank you for such a wonderful experience, we felt so relaxed by your presence and are just so happy with how you took care of us and organized the shoot."

Documentary Services

I’m passionate about using mediums of photography, film and writing to document untold stories and lesser known culture in remote and rural landscapes. Growing up in the Northumberland countryside has given me a deep curiosity about rural living, feeding into work that celebrates the quiet resilience and creativity of small communities. I work hard to build genuine relationships with local people and makers to create visual pieces that honour their history and surroundings, and often spend years nurturing trust with my contacts in these communities.

Photojournalism

I’ve completed commissions for print and online publications, exploring subjects including emergency services, ecology, and farming practices through photography and writing. Workshops and Facilitation

I have years of experience facilitating workshops, panels, and events with a focus on identity, belonging and community. I’ve also supported other creatives in the practicalities of launching and running their own workshops. I’m currently developing an Arts Council bid to run a series of creative writing workshops for people of mixed identity. It’s a project close to my heart, and one I hope to share more about soon!

“The ‘Changing Seasons’ poetry workshop, ran by Oi Mei, was a beautifully peaceful space where I felt supported to explore poetry. This was something I had always wanted to get back to but didn't have the confidence or time before attending the workshop. It left me feeling joyful and able to explore writing more poetry in my everyday life as a way of self expression and processing my feelings. A huge thanks to Oi Mei for holding the workshop and guiding us so expertly!”

Nimerta, participant from my ‘Changing Seasons’ Workshop for ESA.NE ‘Queer Asian Poets’ event.
